The parabens scandal

Parabens are a family of chemical preservatives used to extend the shelf life of cosmetic, food, and pharmaceutical products. Among the most common are methylparaben, ethylparaben, propylparaben, and butylparaben. They prevent the growth of bacteria and molds, thus ensuring the stability and safety of the products.

However, studies have suggested that certain parabens can mimic estrogens in the body, thereby disrupting the hormonal system. They are therefore suspected of having effects on fertility and increasing the risk of hormone-dependent cancers such as breast cancer.

That is why many brands today offer paraben-free cosmetics, taking care of both your health and the planet.

Why avoid parabens?

Potential health risks

Although studies are not conclusive, some research suggests that parabens could have an endocrine-disrupting effect, which could be concerning for fertility and hormonal development.

Allergies and irritations

Some people may develop allergic reactions or skin sensitivity to parabens, resulting in redness, itching, and skin irritation.

The environmental impact of parabens

Parabens released into the environment can be absorbed by wildlife and plants, particularly by marine organisms, which could disrupt ecosystems. Indeed, traces of parabens have been detected in drinking water and aquatic organisms, suggesting that they are not completely eliminated by wastewater treatment plants.

They are absorbed by marine organisms, notably by fish and mollusks. Some researchers have discovered that parabens act as endocrine disruptors in these animals, affecting their reproduction and development.

Moreover, when products containing parabens are disposed of in garbage or wastewater, they can seep into the soil and groundwater: this can disrupt the natural balance of ecosystems, whether terrestrial or aquatic.

How to identify parabens in cosmetics?

To choose paraben-free cosmetics, several tips will help you:

  • Check the list of ingredients: the first step to finding paraben-free cosmetics is to read the labels. Look for indications such as "paraben-free" on the product. In the INCI list, parabens are easily recognized by the ending "paraben" (e.g., methylparaben, propylparaben...). Brands concerned about their customers' health will clearly indicate this information on their packaging or on their website;

  • Beware of misleading labels: some products state "paraben-free," but may contain other synthetic preservatives that are not necessarily safer for health;

  • Research brands: research the brands that interest you to find out if they are committed to creating "cosmetics without harmful substances." Check the "about" page on their website, look into their values, commitments, ingredient policies, and read consumer reviews. This way, you will find trustworthy brands that will genuinely take care of your health.

What are the alternatives to parabens?

Manufacturers use different solutions to replace parabens, while ensuring the preservation of cosmetics. Among the alternatives, there are notably:

  • Propanediol: it is a skin-friendly preservative that does not irritate and is safe for the environment;
  • Benzyl alcohol: naturally present in certain essential oils, it has antibacterial and antifungal properties. However, it is part of a list of 26 allergens and can cause various skin problems, as it is potentially irritating and allergenic;
  • Plant extracts: some plant extracts such as grapefruit seed extract or rosemary have natural preservative properties;
  • Waterless formulas : cosmetics in the form of oil or powder require fewer preservatives because bacteria and molds primarily develop in aqueous environments.

Grangettes: a brand that excludes parabens

Some tips for a transition to paraben-free cosmetics

  1. Scan your beauty products with the cosmetic analysis apps: Yuka, Clean Beauty, or INCI Beauty allow you to understand whether the composition of your cosmetic product is good or bad. At Grangettes Switzerland, our formulations are conscientiously designed and we are proud to achieve excellent results on the vast majority of these apps;
  2. Change gradually: replace your usual cosmetics with paraben-free alternatives as they run out;
  3. Adopt a minimalist routine: the fewer products you use, the less you are exposed to controversial substances.
