The different types of dark circles
There are different types of dark circles:
- colored dark circles: a blue-purple dark circle is due to the fact that the vessels and muscles are visible under the very thin skin of the lower eyelids. Brown circles are linked to hyperpigmentation of the skin;
- hollow dark circles: with age, the skin tissues relax and the fat tends to melt. This phenomenon is particularly visible under the eyes, where the melting of fat creates a hollow, giving a tired look to the face.
The causes of dark circles under the eyes
The way of life
Sleeping too little, drinking too much wine, or even smoking can cause a lack of oxygen in the blood, which can lead to the appearance of dark circles under the eyes.
Poor sleep hygiene
Lack of sleep causes the blood vessels under the eyes to dilate, which can cause dark circles to appear. Lack of sleep can also cause fluid to build up under the eyes, making them appear puffy. Conversely, sleeping too long can also cause puffiness and dark circles.
Skin aging
Skin aging can cause dark circles. With age, the skin becomes thinner and loses its elasticity. This thinning of the skin around the eyes makes the blood vessels even more visible. The area under the eyes can then appear darker: these are dark circles .
The diet
What you eat can make dark circles appear easier. Indeed, if you do not eat healthily, you risk having vitamin and mineral deficiencies. And if you lack vitamin C and zinc, this can promote the appearance of dark circles.
The medical problems
Dark circles can be signs of underlying diseases. This is particularly the case:
- thyroid disorders: thyroid diseases can lead to water retention, particularly around the eyes, which causes dark circles;
- anemia, linked to iron deficiency: low iron levels lead to a poor supply of oxygenated blood to the skin, which can cause dark circles;
- psoriasis and eczema: they irritate the skin, and can cause redness, or change the color of the skin. This then becomes a little darker, which gives rise to dark circles.
Stress
Dark circles can come from a state of stress and anxiety. Indeed, these psychological states lead to mental fatigue, which causes physical signs, such as dark circles.
8 anti-dark circle solutions
- Apply cold water compresses: When you wake up, apply compresses soaked in cold water to your eyelids for a few minutes. This reduces eye swelling;
- Get enough sleep: A good night's sleep is approximately 8 hours. Try going to bed earlier and taking a moment to relax before bedtime: this will help you fall asleep more easily;
- Eat healthily: eat fruits, vegetables, avoid coffee, and don't eat too much sugar in order to stay in shape. Pepper, orange, kiwi, avocado, spinach and even red fruits have anti-oxidant, even decongestant, properties for some of them! A real plus against dark circles;
- Do massages around the eyes: apply your cosmetic treatments using small circular movements and tapping under your eyes to activate blood circulation. This also helps reduce puffiness;
- Apply ice cubes: use small ice cubes wrapped in a towel so as not to attack the skin. The cold of the ice cubes helps stimulate blood circulation and decongest dark circles and bags under the eyes;
- Do exercise: sport stimulates blood circulation, which contributes to good skin health;
- Apply rose water: add a few drops of rose water to cold water compresses. Rose water has toning and moisturizing properties that act against dark circles. Cornflower floral water also helps fight tired eyes;
- Drink plenty of water: dry skin is one of the main causes of dark circles under the eyes;
- Turn to green tea: you can apply cooled green tea bags to your eyes to reduce dark circles.
